High Nitrogen Fertilization Decreases Seed Weight but Increases Longevity in Tomato Seeds

چکیده

Nitrogen fertilization is a key practice in agriculture and its effects on yield quality of most commodity products are widely known. However, the response seed production to N fertilization, especially with regard quality, still poorly understood. The objective this study was determine effect tomato quality. Six attributes were assessed (weight, standard germination, germination rate under normal adverse conditions, dormancy longevity) cv. Moneymaker plants fertigated one three nutrient solutions differing their concentration: 5, 15 or 25 mM. Seed weight decreased by 4% increasing while mean time did not vary among treatments, average values 89.7% 6.2 days, respectively. percentage when seeds imbibed reduced osmotic potential; however, less pronounced from mM treatment, indicating lower dormancy. When evaluated after accelerated aging, high treatment showed greater longevity. These results contribute optimizing practices for seeds.

Seed longevity: survival and maintenance of high germination ability of dry seeds.

The seed constitutes the main vector of plant propagation and it is a critical development stage with many specificities. Seed longevity is a major challenge for the conservation of plant biodiversity and for crop success. Seeds possess a wide range of systems (protection, detoxification, repair) allowing them to survive in the dry state and to preserve a high germination ability. Therefore, th...

Seed Priming Increases Germination and Seedling Quality in Antirrhinum, Dahlia, Impatiens, Salvia and Zinnia Seeds

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hydropriming on seed germination and seedling growth of five different flower seed species (Antirrhinum, Dahlia, Impatiens, Salvia and Zinnia). Hydropriming (20oC, 24 h), surface dried or dried back afterwards, was found to increase germination percentage, seedling emergence and fresh and dry weight. In all species, the maximum advantage i...

Weight Rhythms: Weight Increases during Weekends and Decreases during Weekdays

BACKGROUND/AIMS The week's cycle influences sleep, exercise, and eating habits. An accurate description of weekly weight rhythms has not been reported yet - especially across people who lose weight versus those who maintain or gain weight. METHODS The daily weight in 80 adults (BMI 20.0-33.5 kg/m(2); age, 25-62 years) was recorded and analysed to determine if a group-level weekly weight fluct...

Burial increases seed longevity of two Artemisia tridentata (Asteraceae) subspecies.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Seed longevity and persistence in soil seed banks may be especially important for population persistence in ecosystems where opportunities for seedling establishment and disturbance are unpredictable. The fire regime, an important driver of population dynamics in sagebrush steppe ecosystems, has been altered by exotic annual grass invasion. Soil seed banks may play an activ...

Seed Coating Increases Seed Moisture Uptake and Restricts Embryonic Oxygen Availability in Germinating Cereal Seeds

Seed coating is a technology to improve germination and homogenize stand establishment. Although coating often results in lower germination rates, seeds that do germinate grow more vigorously and show strongly reduced respiratory losses during reserve mobilization. We hypothesize that the higher mobilization efficiency is due to a shift in the enzymatic cleavage of sucrose from invertase to suc...
